Comment (MacKay's):

In my opinion, when you are travelling in Scotland you dampen down a bit your expectations when it comes to fine cuisine (at least in small villages), so to find something exciting in the north-western most point of the Scottish mainland was a lovely surprise. This establishment is both hotel and eatery (six rooms) and is worth reserving, at least for a bed, long before you arrive. Situated on the main street, as is everything else, it does not benefit from great views, but has been done with a lovely touch by its owners and is well worth a stop, if for no other reason than its desserts. A full menu is served but we went just for the cheesecake as that was what we felt like in the late afternoon. Some of you will taste every vanilla ice-cream you come across always looking for the very best, or perhaps it is the creme brulée or another drink or dessert (I know for many years I was searching for the best pina colada I could find). In Geneva it is often said that the best cheesecake is to be found at Cafe des Bains. Well I am delighted (sorry Caroline) to report that the best cheesecake outside of Geneva is now to be found in Durness, Scotland, and that it is worth the trip by plane or by car just to try it. Made by chef Donna, it is out of this world, covered as it is in a coulis of berries and fresh strawberries. I wanted to have a second portion but thought my heart might give out. The coffee was also excellent (one of the best I have ever had) which again is amazing given this is a far flung, remote corner of Scotland....

To be improved (MacKay's):

I am always amazed to find that no matter where you go in Scotland the service staff are most often from eastern Europe. Nothing against eastern Europeans (who are fantastic in every way) but it is a pity one does not find more Scots men and women working in these places....
