Comment (Café Misterio):

Considered by many "the" restaurant in Carrasco, not so much for its food but for everything combined. Service is certainly good, decor is attractive and changes regularly and clientele is upmakret. Wine was excellent and food very tasty. I will definitely be coming back....

Comment (Café Misterio):

Second review. Amazing sushi and a dessert to die for with three chocolates: a mousse, a cake, and a chocolate creme brulée. Saturday you will find the best see and be seen crowd in Montevideo but come by cab as parking is a nightmare....

Comment (Bar 62):

In Pocitos, the upscale neighbourhood next to the Rambla. Cute, bistro type decor on interior all in wood and black painted metal. Normal fish and meat menu of this type of restaurant in Montevideo. They have a sushi menu but I think it is for nights mainly. Friendly service. Good without being anything more....

Comment (Bar 62):

Go at night for the sushi. Had some of the best sushi I ever ate. Amazing. A bit dark and grungy decor, but elegant and handsome clientele. No fuss, no nonsense, good canteen for MOntevideo....

Comment (Rara Avis Café):

There is a café downstairs and a restaurant upstairs (on the ground floor) in this beautiful building attached to the mina concert hall of Montevideo, the Solis. A perfect location for dinner before or after a spectacle, but also for lunch and really for any time as it is very special. Finding a good restaurant in Montevideo is not easy, but to find one with a beautiful decor on top is enough to make you cry. The café downstairs has a kitchen visible in parts through large glass panes and is otherwise built around a large bar in the center. There is also a wine cellar visible behind glass doors which must have one of the best wine collections in Uruguay. The service ids good although our waitress was not particularly great today and then menu for lunch is either fixed or you can order form a larger carte. Prices are expensive for Montevideo but not for foreigners. We took the day menu which is served which an excellent glass of rosé brut from Argentina. We also tried a superb red, a Catena Zapata Saint Felicien 2008. Cabernet Merlot. I am told all Catena Zapata wines are excellent. Food was very tasty with vegetables cooked just right and a delicious mixed salad. DEfinitely will be going back....

To be improved (Rara Avis Café):

The attitude of our waitress....

Comment (Isla de Flores):

Beautiful little place with very few tables and an open grill/kitchen. It felt like I was in a Paris bistro. Lovely decoration, original and slightly avant garde. Service was friendly and food was good of bistro quality not gourmet. Did not pay so not sure of prices but seemed reasonable. All restaurants in Montevideo are reasonable at current exchange rates and price levels....

To be improved (Isla de Flores):

My dinner partner noted a few technical details about the decoration which could have been done better but from the moment you have me eating on white linen I am normally has happy as a pig in mud....

Comment (Kokoro):

Nice, with good sushi and sake, but the decor, while Japanese, is just OK and the service leaves a little to be desired. Still probably one of the better, if not the best, Japanese restaurants, although several non Japanese restaurants like Cafe Misterio and Bar 62 have excellent Japanese sushi. In a city with few top restaurants this place is to be recommended....

Comment (Estrecho):

I had been dying to visit this restaurant as all of the reviews I heard were outstanding and led me to believe this was, is, or might be the best food in town. The restaurant is only open at lunch and is quite unique. You can only sit and eat at the bar for one (estrecho means narrow in spanish) in what is a long, narrow space where you wonder how the staff manage to perform their work. The kitchen is open and everything is made in front of you which is not normal for Montevideo but is great. Atmosphere gets top marks. Food is good to very good is the conclusion of today's lunch, although I would hope the menu changes often as it is not very big. The starters seem to change daily and I had a tomato soup to start, which was good, and followed this with a salad of filet mignon and goat's cheese and not a bad goat cheese at all, apparently from San José (it is very hard to find good goat's cheese in this country). Desserts we did not try but looked excellent and my glass of house wine (Shiraz) was very good which is unusual for Montevideo. This is not a gourmet setting nor gourmet food but everything was excellent so I have to give the restaurant high marks. Where I was a bit disappointed was to see barely a smile on the staff during the whole meal. Restaurant staff, as a rule, do not seem overly happy in most restaurants in Montevideo and it would have been a pleasure to feel that here was an exception. Maybe I just got the staff on a bad day. In any event I am coming back to try the rest of the menu and perhaps also to catch some more smiles....

Comment (Bouza Restaurant):

I think I can say confidently, having tried over 30 restaurants in Montevideo, that this one stands out by quite a long measure. Food excellent, decor and setting excellent, wines excellent, service excellent (and exceptional by Montevideo standards). The location is 25 minutes outside of the center fo town on the outskirts of the city but well worth a detour especially for lunch on the weekend or for business meals. Expensive but WOW. Part of one of Uruguay's leading wineries where you can also buy their wine and visit the wine cellars and wine making facilities. I highly recommend the wine degustation with your meal and particularly the one for more expensive vintages. Well worth it and a good way to decide what you want to buy. Food was delicious. We tried the fish as well as the lamb chops. Even had excellent goat's cheese which is very hard to find in this country....

Comment (El Palenque):

Palenque is apparently a post you tie your horse to. No idea where the swordfish on the logo comes from. You can eat outside, inside or at the bar. One of the best eating experiences in Montevideo, especially on a sunny day or on a Saturday. I love eating at the bar as you get to watch the cooks working the giant barbecue grill (assado) with its wood burning logs and bright hot coals. The owner is or was from Galicia and they serve and amazing octopus, even better than anything I tasted in Galicia. I am told they occasionally produce a crab empanada that is to die for. Good choice of beers. Could use some better house wine. Try the house 50-50 which is a mix between champagne and white wine and is quite delicious and appropriately famous. great and unforgettable setting in the Mercado do Puerto. I had very good lamb chops with barbecued pumpkin....

Comment (Domestica):

What a lovely discovery in Montevideo. Located in the area of the old town, this restaurant is a breath of fresh air. While many in Montevideans avoid the old town, except to work during the day, it is actually quite safe during the day and particularly this location which is behind the Theatre Colon and near the Anglican church. The owner, Rosanna, has restored an old house painting the interiors white, something very unusual in this country where interiors are usually sombre. Part art gallery, part boutique, part shop, it serves healthy food with a good serving of love, something one does not often find in this town's dishes. Will be coming back and hope to make this one of my canteens....

Comment (Bar Tabaré):

People will not be falling all over each other to recommend top restaurants in Montevideo. It seems not to have had a huge restaurant culture but the city is morphing. Price were up 15-30% in 2010 and hipper spots are sprouting up where you begin to hear travelers as well as locals. Montevideo is an informal non-show-off city. this place fits in perfectly. A former épicerie that has it beautiful wall paneling in wood and its marble counter still intact, this place is dripping with character. Specializing in sushi and various meats and fishes, it is well worth a detour. Our sommelier recommended a Sauvignon Blanc which I should not have taken as it is a bit too dry for me, but otherwise the meal was very enjoyable and the service pleasant and friendly. I had a local version of a california roll without the external seaweed wrapping which was delicious. A red tune filet was a bit overcooked, but the fish was quite delicious on a bed of pumpkin purée....

Comment (Paullier y Guaná Restaurante):

Love this place. Done by same people that did the Tabaré and in a similar style: namely they converted a former grocery store. The table tops are a myriad of colours in an otherwise white setting with lovely richly-coloured wood, a delight. The service did not stand out (as is usual in Montevideo), nor, unfortunately did the house wine, but the daily menu was enjoyable and I would certainly want to discover more. Apparently there is live music from time to time. Cool crowd of artsy types....

This restaurant doubles as a bar and, later at night, as a disco. Friday you can look out for the soccer stars and there chics... Lats night we had a delicious dinner accompanied by excellent Caipiroskas of passion fruit. I had a salmon with stir-fried vegetables and was in heaven. The risotto was also very good if a bit salty and the sushi was nice too. A chocolate fendant for dessert was a bit dry but also god. I am dying ot come back. Service was not fantastic and the table wabbled until we fixed it, but otherwise a fun evening....

Comment (El Gran Pez):

What a breath of fresh air. Owned by a family that has a long history of excellence and innovation on the culinary scene along the coast of Uruguay from Montevideo to Punta. This spot is one of their own as they have had a lot to do with the development of El Pina, a lovely coastal community 20km east of Montevideo. This is a restaurant locate din a house, hidden down a street without any marking so make sure you know where you are going before you set out or take a phone number with you as even the locals do not know exactly where it is located. Ideal for nice weather, you will be offered very good service and a gastronomy and menu that are a good step above what you can be used to in Uruguay. this is not gourmet but it is very bistro style and good at that. For 2 we paid 1400 pesos with starter and desert shared between us. Very reasonable for the lovely experience we had. Don't forget to go down to the beach afterwards for a nice walk along the water....

To be improved (El Gran Pez):

The decor of the house is nothing to write home about but is rustic and suits the environment and house perfectly. Excellent is the cutlery from the old Carrasco hotel (but that is another story!)...

Decor by Carlos Ott but you would not really have known if someone did not tell you. Service was good and setting OK but I found the ambiance a bit cold. Food was good but I have eaten much better lamb before. I am told you have to eat lamb at certain times of the year in Uruguay as they otherwise let it age and it gets a bit tough. My side-dish of vegetable was excellent....

Comment (La Giraldita):

I have to admit I really enjoyed lunch in this restaurant. First it was the decor: the walls are covered with newspaper clippings and other printed paraphernalia that, with the wood, and cluttered shelves, give the place and other-worldly feel that is too often missing in Montevideo. Plus it is cosy as hell. I was served lunch at 15:30 which I considered a highly respectable practice although I am not sure anyone coming after me would have been served. The menu of the day was perfectly correct and prices nothing to complain about. Will definitely be coming back especially as it is around the corner from where I am working and because they serve one of my favourite dishes: ceviche....

Considered by some to be Montevideo's top restaurant, I found it enjoyable and would like to come back to try other dishes. I had the duck which was properly cooked, but found the julienne of vegetables slightly chewy and not quite as good as I expected. The foie gras was excellent. All in all a nice experience with a handsome crowd....

Comment (Francis):

Second visit. By day, this time, restaurant has brighter colours than most other Montevideo restaurants. It is a very "in" spot with open kitchen and slightly more daring menu than one usually finds. Sushi is there but also many other items. This said my salad disappointed: very basic in taste and in presentation. Also the wine selection left a little to be desired and I had to call someone to fill my wine (service is never top in Montevideo). I am going to lower my rating to 14 although I think this restaurant has a potential for much higher ratings....
