Commentaire général (The Royal Crescent Hotel):Having lunch here yesterday was a complete surprise; a chance to see an old friend in his new town: Bath Spa, as it is called. I took the train from London and we walked up to the famous Crescent which has probably the best view in town and is infamous from the many postcard shots of this town. It is a hotel and the restaurant is located in the back with very much the feeling of the English country gourmet restaurant. The whole is a Relias Chateau. the conclusion after lunch for two: nice but still a leap from a one Michelin level, but close. We had a starter and main and a nice white wine. I find the service a bit intrusive, but otherwise it was fairly good. We had an excellent amuse bouche, a very good pumpkin soup (although it lacked that little something extra), and a main of duck (nice but a little overcooked for my itastes). Also a pity not to have the view: the restaurant is located facing an inner courtyard....
Points à améliorer (The Royal Crescent Hotel):Service needs to be a bit refined but otherwise good. Cuisine needs to be a little bit more imaginative and take some more risks with flavours....

Commentaire général (The Dining Room, Whatley Manor):Martin Burge's modern English, 2-star Michelin cuisine is exceptionally refined, with numerous amuses interspersed between courses. The atmosphere is low-lit, contemporary and the service is happily un-stuffy....
