Based on an existing iTaste rating of "19" I had to discover this mountain restaurant that is only 20km from the village I spend a lot of time in, Chateau d'Oex. You would be curious too wouldn't you, especially when, as I have reported before, there are not too many restaurants in these parts serving original or delicious cuisine.
Well all I can say is that the reviewer who gave it a 19 must have been to another restaurant. What a let down based on the expectation of this note. It is true that the food is reasonable and the "acceuil" very friendly, but accolades stop there. First the setting. This is a village that is a bit out of the way. You get there from a turning just before the turning to Lessoc, driving between Gruyère and Montbovon. You should have good winter tires if coming up after a snow fall or in winter. Sciernes is not he most beautiful village in the area and the restaurant itself, both inside and out, has very little to make it stand out. It is a typical restaurant like you could find in a hundred (read a thousand) remote villages in Switzerland. This one lacked much charm, but again in such places you are usually not looking for great things, just to have your meal and move on with a friendly salutation that maybe there will be another time. This is not a place you'd seek out to become a regular here or to make a special detour with friends.
The food was correct, with the soup probably made form a powder and the meal good but without any redeeming factors. Upstairs in the building is a room available for larger groups but we did not see it. Lots of parking outside.
You are much better off to go to the Auberge de la Couronne in Lessoc (100 times better in fact). Nothing much to really make this place shine and I am trying because the couple who run it are very sweet and seem to want to make a big effort.
